Mind Blown.

The word aniseikonia derives from the Greek words “an,” “is,” and “eikon,” which mean “not,” “equal,” and “image,” respectively. Aniseikonia occurs when there is a difference in an image’s perceived size or shape and is often caused by anisometropia, which is a difference in refractive error.

Aniseikonia is treated with the surgical or medical correction of the underlying cause, optically with refractive surgery, clear lens exchange, secondary intraocular lens (IOL) placement, contact lenses, or via spectacle correction with iseikonic lenses.

Aniseikonia is the difference in image size perceived between the eyes from unequal magnification. The two most common causes are anisometropia and retinal pathology. Symptoms of aniseikonia include diplopia, headache, dizziness, disorientation, and excessive eye strain.

It is already known that patients with keratoconus typically have different visual acuity in each eye which can alter stereopsis. For that reason, the use of RGP contact lenses is beneficial as it reduces aniseikonia.
